The Beach

I was very lucky to grow up near a beach. As a child my summers were spent there; from dusk til dawn I was either swimming in the ocean, building sandcastles or eating sandy sandwiches and drinking chicken noodle soup from a flask. Some of my happiest memories are from this fun filled period, when a typical Northern Irish rain-filled summer didn’t put you off a trip to the beach.

This weekend I left the big smoke of Belfast to head ‘home home’ and my visit culminated in a walk to this same beach with my mum. Once we walked down ‘The Glen’, a pathway overgrown with beautiful foliage, we arrived at the shore. This is still one of my favourite places in the world; the sound of the sea gently lapping at your feet combined with melodic bird song and very pretty views creates such a relaxing setting that you immediately feel the stresses of daily life melting away.

When I was growing up I took having such a pretty slice of nature on my doorstep for granted. Since I moved Belfast however, and the beach isn’t only a few minutes away, I fully appreciate how special it was. Now when I head ‘home home’ to visit my parents, that feeling I get when I first spot the Irish Sea is hard to beat; it’s when I most feel like I’m home.
